HOW TO: Configure a Global Catalog Server Print E-mail

The Global Catalog (GC) contains a searchable, partial representation of every object in every domain in a multi-domain Active Directory forest. GC servers are mainly used for forest-wise (global) searches and, in multi-domain forests, GCs resolve user principal name (UPN) logon names and determine group membership during logon. Recommended design practices dictate that there should be at least one Global Catalog server at each site, unless those sites have maximum availability connections or utilise universal group caching. By default, in a multi-domain forest, failure to access a GC (and check group membership) results in an unsuccessful logon.

This article briefly discusses how to configure a Global Catalog Server using either the GUI, command line or script.
